Djúpivogur, Iceland

This small town is situated at the mouth of Berufjörður fjord on the south coast of Iceland with Búlandstindur (1069 m) towering over it.

We had a leisurely morning as I didn’t have a firm plan (I know: surprise, surprise …) and our town walking tour was scheduled for the afternoon.

So we had a sleep-in and a later leisurely breakfast. The sun was sort of out and it was quite picturesque.

Disembarkation was by tender and the ship is parked a long way out.

As the town is so small (pop. about 500), we didn’t want to end up sightseeing the things that would be covered later in the tour, so I found a hiking trail that I thought MF wouldn’t complain about too much (last night he stated his legs were ‘had it’); in fact I had a number of hikes as a plan today but had gone to bed last night thinking I’d see how things panned out in the morning …

Our walk was an absolute delight. Yes, it was longer than planned (because we went off-piste - again!). And despite the boggy areas where our feet got wet (because we walked in sandals and socks as our boots are still drying out from yesteray’s - unplanned - river crossing), the walk was just lovely. It was a real help that it had markers (!!) - yay!

And the flowers were lovely - and there were crowberries(!).

The walk went away from the town to the end of the peninsula and looped back. The weather was a mix of mist one moment and sun the next; the scenery also was varied: rocky beaches, bog lands, lakes, vistas out to sea, crashing waves: just wonderful.

We got back with a little time to spare so we walked up to the lookout; it had started to rain, but this cleared after a time and we had lovely views before walking back down to join our group.

The town tour was good. The young man was interesting and clear. We had a lovely singing presentation by a local vocalist in - wait for it - a cod liver oil silo known here as (creatively … but that is very Icelandic …) The Tank (minus the cod liver oil …): very atmospheric.

And of course the main sight in town: the Eggs of Merry Bay (Eggin í Gleðivík), a local sculpture.

All mostly in sunshine, if a tad cold at times!

We had a local beer at the pub near the port IN SUNSHINE on the outside deck - the only thing we’ve spent money on since joining the tour. Makes you feel a bit sad really: there is little incentive to spend money onshore (although obviously the tours organised by the ship support the local economy).

The ship is leaving early today: 4 pm. We were back on one of the last tenders at 3 pm.

We shared a hamburger in the poolside bar (a very very late lunch (!) but trying to restrict our food intake a bit … ).

Walked 11 kms (not bad for a ‘rest’ day…).
